Hi Kevin,

I am also interested in Mat(t)hews families in Louth/Drogheda around 1820 -1860. In particular a James Mathews who fathered Alice, Anne, James, Peter  nand John with a mother named Ellen? about 1840-1845? Does this fit with your Mathew's

Welcome to Rootschat, Danny Boy. Kevin hasn't been online since 2006 but perhaps you and Yvonne might be able to help each other.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Yvonne,

Quick answer is I don't know. There are quite a few Mathews aroung the Drogheda patch about this date, most likely related. However linking them is quite a problem.

The James Mathews I am looking to identify fathered Anne ca Jun-1845; Alice Feb-1847, James ? no record found; Peter in May-1853 and John APR-1856. All with wife Ellen [McConnell or Connell]. I can follow all the family as they moved to the UK but not with James who I assume died in Ireland ca 1856 -1870. No more children and his widow and family  located in Lancashire in 1871.

I can not find the marriage of James and Ellen but it must have been about 1840 -1845, assuming Roman Catholic like all the children. Birth dates would be around 20 Years earlier. I look forward to more details arriving on the 'brsgeneology' site.

It look like your Patrick's father would be about the same age as James. Any solid information on siblings in the same era?

Maybe other more experienced Louth experts  can shed a little light on the circumstances of the time.

My Patrick Joseph drops the Patrick in all the census in England and only uses Joseph. He uses his full name on marriage cert to Catherine Daley 1885. It took me quite a while to trace the marriage as I was looking under Joseph. I do not have any other info and as you say hopefully more records will come on line.

Regards
Yvonne

The sponsors at the baptism of my grandfather, John Francis Magee, at St Peter's (RC), Drogheda on 8th January 1869 were a Gerald Daly & a Mary Matthews.

Any likely connection?

Hi Hugo,

Answer - I do not know precisely. My Great grandfather is the Peter Mat(t)hews born 5th May 1853. One 't' in Ireland but two 't' s in England after settling here.

In my searchs there I can find no related Mary's about that time. It is a fair probability that there is a relation down the line nearer my James Mathews born about 1820. He likely had a few brothers & sisters knocking about. Birth registrations of Peter and siblings show no Mat(t)hews as witnesses which might have given a clue.

If you look up on the BRSgeneology.com for births of a Mary Mathews there are quite a few - 41 from 1846 to 1854.

Good hunting Hugo
