Sunderland, England in 1856
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 08:46 BST (UK) »
Hi - has anyone any idea where French's Entry in Sunderland was in 1856.  I have my great great grandfather listed as his last residence there but cannot find any maps showing the location.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks

You may be better off having this moved to the Durham section. Someone there may have an old directory which often list all streets etc. although 'entry' suggests an alley way.

There does not appear to be any such place. It is not shown in the 1851 Census Street Index, or on the 1860 120 Inches to the Mile Maps. The only similar reference I can find is  to French's Wharf near the foot of Stob Lane, it was also known as Wylam Wharf which you can see on the map at http://www.durham-images.org/public/ms/m11/m11se1.html

If you care to give his name we could look for him in the 1851 census.

Edward Rowell lived in Burleigh Street in 1851, with wife Elizabeth and daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary Ann. I can't see any French's Entry in the area, see the map at http://www.durham-images.org/public/maps/os512/os512_sh11.pdf

Iv'e looked at the Directories for 1827, 1850, and 1858 and there are no entries for French's Entry, French's Yard  or French's Passage. It could be that this is a local name for another place, there are a number of examples in Sunderland where a place is known by different names at different times.
