Edward Latham
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 15:52 BST (UK) »
Edward Latham was born 1851 in  Cork Ireland . He shows up as Lathom on the 1891 census return for Seacombe in Cheshire as a Examining Officer Customs. I wondered if anyone can tell me what that is or if there are any records I can access to see his service. I don't know when he came to England from Ireland but he died 27 April 1897. I also wondered what a house would have cost back in the 1890s in Seacombe and how to find this out .
Appreciate any help.
Many Thanks .

Examining Officers were responsible for scrutinizing import and export entries (traders' declarations) of ships' cargoes, especially in respect of declared value, origin and nature of the goods. They would select certain cargoes for physical examination and comparison with the Customs entries.

TNA Kew's Guide to Customs Officers is on http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/customs-officers/

As for house prices, I would suggest perusing the ads in newspapers. I would also suggest that you need to consider both renting and buying - not sure what percentage of people owned their own house then.

At the beginning of the 20th Century 90% of all houses were rented from private landlords.
