Ellen Hyde died Adelaide in 1917: sister of Peter Lalor?
« on: Saturday 22 August 15 13:19 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if any researchers could shed any light on Ellen Hyde who died in Adelaide in 1917 aged 65. According to her obituary ("Advertiser" 29/5/1917) she was the sister of Peter Lalor of Eureka. Nothing makes sense about that claim, except for the fact it was repeated over and over in the SA papers. She was the husbane of Edward Hyde and had a daughter Eva Hyde (b 1872) who married Frederick Pritchard in Adelaide in December 1891. Any help would be appreciated.  John

http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/ballarat-history/eureka/item/341-genealogy-of-the-lalor-family  perhaps our OP may consider emailing some of the people who have contributed to the info on that link.

I did not see any mention of any Ellen as a sibling for Peter Lalor born 1827, the youngest child.

Each of the many news items are worded identically.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5590174
The Advertiser 29 May 1917
Mrs. Ellen Hyde, an old colonist died on May 26 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. Pritchard. Fairford street, Unley. Mrs. Hyde was born at Termikell, Queen's County, Ireland, and came to Australia about 40 46 years ago. She was a sister of Peter Lalor, who led the miners in the insurrection at the Eureka Stockade on December 4, 1854. He was elected to the Victorian Parliament two years later, and subsequently became a Minister of the Crown, and in 1880 Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

It is as though each editor back 1917 had forgotten when Eureka occurred or that Peter Lalor when he died in 1889, was an elderly chap .... it is not as though he had climbed back into the woodwork after Eureka ..... as I understand it, he was a Member of Victoria's Parliament when he died ....

I'm trying to find Ellen's burial in case there has been an error with her age on the death reg.  However Eva was born c1872 which would make Ellen only 15 years old in 1872.

Ellen's death record says she was 65. But there are some curious newspaper references suggesting she was about 90. I find it odd that this assertion was repeated several times even in later generations of the family. I can find no marriage record for Ellen or birth for Eva in Australia England of Ireland. John

Nor is there a death of Edward HYDE in SA to 1916.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article87524993
The PRITCHARD-HYDE Silver wedding anniversary in which Edward is now the late Edward HYDE of Adelaide.

If as you say Ellen may have been 90 years old in 1917 so born c1827 and Eva was born c1872, Ellen would have been at the end of her child bearing years.  There is no mention of Ellen in the LALOR research.

No luck with her burial location.
