Bride's Occupation
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 02:19 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters:

I'm wondering about the bride's occupation on this marriage register. Does anyone think that it is a ditto mark and that she was also a Potter?

To me it looks like a ditto mark, but it could also be an "n" for none.

Either she was a potter (my first thought inclination).

Or wasn't working.

I dont think it's an "n" but may be just a line through the space.

My first thought was that she was also a potter ie "ditto".

Depending on the date of the marriage, have you found her in any census before and after her marriage to see if she has an occupation?

Depending on the date of the marriage, have you found her in any census before and after her marriage to see if she has an occupation?

This marriage was Dec 1871 in Tamworth, Staffs, between Edith Smith, 19 (father - Joseph) and Henry Taylor.

I'm not sure if I've found the right Edith on the 1871 census but couldn't find one with an occupation of Potter. Almost all of the other Bride's occupations in the marriage register are left blank so I wonder why a notation would be made this way. That said I wonder why the official filling out the register wouldn't just write 'Potter' if that was her occupation.

Not sure which way to think on this one.

Although many women did work their occupations were often not recorded on documents or censuses.

It is possible that the other women on the register weren't working ....  :-\ Were the spaces just left blank or was there a line through them?

In Edith's case, it's the 'ditto' marks with the line I am unsure about ...  :-\

Because of the ambiguity about wether it's a "ditto" or "elaborate blank" I would suggest (if you have the access) seeing if, elsewhere in the register, this vicar/rector EVER wrote out duplicate occupations in full.
