Selina McCabe
« on: Wednesday 26 August 15 00:41 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find my ancestor, Selina McCabe in the 1861 census. She was born in 1841 probably in Surry to Stephen McCabe and Mary Ann Driscoll. I have found her in the 1841 and 1851 census (in Southwark). I know that she married Thomas Styles on August 3, 1862, in St George the Martyr Southwark, London, when she was 21 years old. Her name was spelled MacCabe on this record. A possible clue is found in her marriage certificate. Her address was 115 Black Friars Rd. Her father was on Keppel St and it looks like she no longer lived there. Any help would be great. Thanks so much!

I can't find her either I'm afraid.

Have you found the rest of the family in 1861? I've only had a quick look so far but I can't easily spot any of them - I would have thought one of the Stephens would be findable, unless they had died before 1861 ....  :-\

Thanks everyone. That looks like my Selina in the 1871 census. I also wonder if that pages are missing. I found something that said the address 115 Black Friars is for the Magdalen Hospital. I then found Susan Butler the witness of her marriage in the census. She was a servant. No sign of Selina but maybe she was a servant or nurse there. It seemed like there might be a page or pages missing. I need to look again to be sure. Thanks again for the help!!

I can see that Selina Maccabe and Thomas Style got married twice!!!

Sep 1862 St George Vol 1d p155
Dec 1862 Portsea     Vol 2b p699

Could this be because he was a navy man and hadn't had permission from his superiors to marry and had to do it again?  Or because she wasn't actually 21 and had married without her fathers consent?

I found her in 1851 as a nine year old, giving her birth year as 1842, then her age seems to float around a bit in 1871, 1881 and 1891, not quite ageing ten years every decade.

What I couldn't find was a birth registration that matched any of these ages.  The closest I got was Mar 1839 Salford Lancs Vol 20 p771 as her parents were Irish and a lot or Irish went through Liverpool and Manchester on arrival in England.  But if this is her then it makes by second point about the need for a second marriage redundant.

But none of this helped me find Selina in 1861, although I did find Thomas on board his ship. though.

Thanks Marl. I have never been able to find any of the McCabe children in the birth records. I know the parents married in London and I assumed that I couldn't find them because they were Catholic but I could be wrong. That is pretty weird that they were married twice in the same year! Thanks for finding that.
