No matter what religion, from July 1837 all births were to be registered.  Baptism or christening would have still occured in their preferred church if they chose..

My next thoughts are: Go to TNA and bung "rg9 missing southwark " in the Discovery Search  records box

16 entries. Wanted to filter down to "Martyr" but the site is a little flaky at the moment

Although civil registration started in 1837, the onus was on the registrars to go around their district and collect birth registrations until a change in the law in 1874 when onus was put upon the parents to register births. A small number of births 1837-1874 slipped through the net but by the later years this was a very small number.

There may not be a birth registration to find.

Known issues for the 1861 can be found here

Thanks again for all of the helpful information on births and missing pages. I wasn't able to find anything that addressed my area but I went in again tonight to check Susan Butler. She was a housekeeper not a servant (just to set the record straight :)). I think, when looking at the first few pages before Susan that some pages are missing. I have attached her information including page number if anyone has time to look and verify this. Thanks!

This looks like some kind of institution, possibly a prison, as the inhabitants, who are all female, seem to be described as "penitent" and identified only by their initials.  A few pages further on what looks like Mary Arid is the matron in the probationary ward.

But there does seem to be a gap between the last regularly enumerated person and the initialled list and the bottom of page 2 is damaged so you can't identify who they are.

I wonder what institution it could have been in St Georges Circus/Circuit?

Thanks for checking that for me. It is nice to get another opinion. It looks like this place was Magdalen Hospital http://www.stgite.org.uk/magdalenhospital.html
I am guessing/hoping Selina was some sort of servant or staff rather than an inmate :)!

I disagree.

St Magdalen was in St George in the East, where as Susan Baker's institution was in in St George Southwark.

Actually, I may be wrong, I didn't read far enough down the page.  Sorry about that.
