Who was Sarah CRAXFORD (b. 1852)?
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 14:45 BST (UK) »
I have a brick wall mystery here. The Registration Indexes quote the following birth:

Sarah Craxford Sept 1852 Newington 1d 178

Intrigued, I obtained a copy of the certificate which quotes:

Sarah born 12th June 1852
Father: Robert CRAXFORD Mercantile Clerk.
Mother: Sarah formerly MEDLOCK
Address: 10 Eltham Street, St Peter Walworth.

Unfortunately, I can't find a reference to marry these two individuals (I have several Roberts of the right age but none which fit here). There is no family resident at that address in the 1851 or 1861 census returns. There is no evidence of a death of a child Sarah which would fit.

The handwriting on the birth certificate is very clear and Craxford is written out three times perfectly readably. I have though looked at several of the often confused variations of the surname.

Any small glimmer would be appreciated.

Regards

Alan

Have you looked for a death for Robert, and a marriage for Sarah, so that they might be appearing as another surname in 1861 - to give you some ideas for Sarah's age and place of birth to help trace her?

Have you also found Robert as a mercantile clerk anywhere at any time?

Robert Craxford who died in 1854 suffered from asiatic cholera. He had married in the 1820 and worked for the Colonial Office. His death is recorded in the book "Sam and Sallie: a novel of the theatre" by Alfred Lane Crauford.

Sarah Craxford (spinster) married Thomas William Franey at St Clement Danes on January 11th 1857

Sarah Ann Augusta Craxford (spinster) married James Mash at St George's Church Bloomsbury on October 18th 1857.
