James O'Neill - Death info help required
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 20:31 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather, James O'Neill was born 1870 in Ireland.

I have been told he left Ireland with his wife Catherine, to go to America, where they had a daughter, Annie, born 1899. (I have not been able to confirm this)

I  found Catherine on the Ireland 1911 census with 2 sons, born Westmeath 1901 & 1903 . It states she is married, with 3 children born and 3 children still living.

I suspect James returned to America with Annie, as I cannot find them on a census.

I have been told that James died in America approx 1949 in some kind of train disaster.

Does anyone have any ideas how I would go about trying to find out about his death or if he and daughter Annie did return/stay in America?

Thanks. Glinny  :)

There are many passenger lists available for free at www.familysearch.org.  Given the common names involved, you probably will have to look through a bunch to find your family.

Do you have a maiden name for Catherine?

Maiden name Jessop

There was a marriage on 25 October 1891 of a James O'Neill born c. 1866  to a Katie Jessop born c. 1868, it took place in Chicago, might be worth following up.

Another possibility worth noting is a James (age 32) and Kate (age 27) O'neill living in Garnkirk, just northeast of Glasgow in  1901.  Both born in Ireland.  With them is a 1 year old son James, also born in Ireland.  And a 9 year old daughter Annie, born in California.
