Kingdon Family Help
« on: Friday 28 August 15 15:17 BST (UK) »
Hello, after buying some kingdon b/d/m certs, I've hit a dead end after discovering a large part of the kingdons from Barnstaple emigrated to Canada around 1900, only my great granddad Sydney john kingdon seemed to remain in Barnstaple before moving onto Swansea. Can anyone please tell me what happened to his parents and when they died in Canada or if they came back. His father was John (Jack) Kingdon born 1855 Barnstaple and listed as still alive on sid's marriage cert from 1908 and his mother was Elizabeth Limebeer born 1854 Barnstaple. I know sid's brother Bruce came back and died in the war but any help with john and Elizabeth and their own parents would be greatly appreciated so I can continue the line backward on ancestry. Matthew.

Free bmd does not show a John or Jack Kingdon born in 1855 in Barnstaple - have you got his birth certificate to confirm year of birth?

There is this one in 1856, with a fancier name:
Births June quarter  1856
John Hamlyn Berry   Kingdon     Barnstaple    5b   445

or this in Tiverton:
Births September quarter  1854
John Kingdon        Tiverton    5b   403

The 1901 census shows that the family is still in Barnstaple, so not left for Canada around 1900, but later - when?

1901
John Kingdon   46  shipwright and bargeman  All born Barnstaple
Elizabeth Kingdon   48
Sydney Kingdon   19   bargeman
Bruce Kingdon   13
George Kingdon   11
Jack Kingdon   10

There is a Bruce Kingdon travelling out to his sister in 1910:
Bruce Kingdon
Age     22  Birth Year about  1888
Date of Arrival:    21 July  1910
Vessel   Empress of Britain
Port of Arrival      Quebec, Canada
Port of Departure     Liverpool, England

he is a labourer, going to Stonewall (?) , Manitoba (?)

There are these Kingdon's in 1906 census, but ages out, and not sure of correct transcriptions:
1906 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta
Immigration Year:   1903
Province    Saskatchewan    District     Assiniboia East
Sub-District Description   Townships 18, 19, 20 in ranges 32, 33 west of the 1st M
Sub-District   34
John Kingdon   56
Elazabeth C Kingdon   53
John L Kingdon   23  son, possibly arrived 1900?
Census Place  34      Assiniboia East     Saskatchewan       Page 13     Family No 112

Just for reference, ancestry has the family transcribed with parents as Kingdon and children as Kingdom in 1891, and Elizabeth Simebeer (Limebeer?) age 16 a step-daughter.

This looks like an alternate spelling for that surname:

Births December quarter  1874
Elizabeth Jane Limebear       Barnstaple    5b   454

(She is showing as Kingdon in 1881 census)

Have you identified John and Elizabeth's marriage?

You have Elizabeth Limebeer born 1854 Barnstaple - do you know if this is actually her birth - does not want to appear a lot older than her husband?

Births December quarter 1852
Elizabeth Jane Limebear            Barnstaple    5b   480
