Sugarstown

Registering my interest in this townland.   An ancestor, James HUDSON or HUTSON married Mary FOLEY  on 8th January, 1855 and gave the address as Sugarstown.   Shortly thereafter they boarded the ship RAMILLIES and sailed to Australia.  On another ship which sailed the same year, the GLORIANA, was James' brother Michael and the parents of James' wife, Edward and Catherine FOLEY as well as some of Mary's siblings.  Jennifer

Thank you.  The linked thread relates to earlier posts from me.  I have been going through the Catholic records now available online.  Found  connections to a possible Foley family in Ballykeogan (close to Sugarstown) but as ages and dates don't line up convincingly am reserving judgement.  Jennifer

I did not find any Foleys or Hudsons in this link but you may still find it of some interest as it concerns an area between Sugarstown and Thomastown.

Link for Griffiths Valuation - dated 1850 for this area.

Excellent background information on the area.  Thank you.  Have been exploring the Griffiths valuations. Useful as it pre-dates the emigration of the FOLEYs and HUDSONs by only five years. I am getting the impression that the population was mostly tenant farmers, with landlords holding multiple properties, and an unknown quantity of labourers. I also have WALSH, WHELAN and BOWER as names of interest in the area.   J

When you are researching Bower Whelan & Walsh.
I'd recommend leaving Walsh till last, due to the large numbers of Walsh's & Walshe's in Co Kilkenny.
You may get lost in the records. I hope your Walsh's have unusual first names.
The surname Bower and Whelan should be much easier to research

Watch out for Phelan surname variation of Whelan
Some of the handwritten Records are difficult to read. Beware of Power surname when you are researching the Bowers.

Thank you.  I'd already come across the hordes of Walsh individuals.  It would be nice to have a Shepherdess or Theophilus but I think I am stuck with James, Marys and Catherines.  Didn't realise that Whelan and Phelan names were connected and thank you for alerting me to possible Bower and Power confusion. Yes, I'll do the less-common names first and hope the others fall into place.  I can see it will neither be quick nor easy.  J

Just a note:

The address would have been where he was living at the time of marriage not necessarily where he was from.

Yes, both parties to the marriage indicated Sugartown so maybe working there in some capacity?   On27/07/1852 James is a witness in a petty sessions court case for the Waterford & Kilkenny Railway Company and on 11/12/1854 is a complainant in a petty sessions court case.  I'm hoping I might be able to shake loose some clues from these events. James Hudson's brother, Michael, appears to have resided in Thomastown itself but I need corroboration.  J
