My apologies in advance for my comments. :-* :-* Never take the results shown on family search as the complete entry in the parish registers.  Entries are frequently incomplete and have been known to be completely incorrect - I've proved it on numerous occasions.  You HAVE to look at the original records.  OK they may be the same BUT ......  ;)  Lancashire records are available on Ancestry, and if you live in England or Wales then a lot of libraries have free access.   :) :)  I hope this helps rather than hinders.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi Sue,

Thank you for your suggestions.

I know that Robert IS definatley his grandfather, through birth and marriage records.

I have Thomas in the 1851 census:
Birth:   Circa 1819 - Middleton, Lancashire, England
Residence:   1851 - 125 York Street, Heywood, Heap, Lancashire, England
Wife:   Ellen Scholfield
Children:   Elizabeth A Scholfield, Thos M Scholfield

He's got his birthplace close but wrong (I find this is common).

I can't really look up the originals as I am in Australia, so I have to rely on the net.

It's Martha/Mary tht's really stumped me.

From Ancestry -parish records

Rochdale - Robert Scholfield and Martha Lord married 17 May 1785

Manchester - Robert Scholfield and Martha Bolton - both of Manchester married 23 October 1786

Martha Scholfield buried 9 October 1837 at Didsbury was 29.  Can't readily find the 1835 burial.

However, the only marriage record that I can find (from Wardleworth, Lancashire, England about 6 kms from Oldham) has a MARTHA Lord listed.

Martha Lord & Robert Scholfield
Marriage:   May 17 1785
 Wardleworth, Lancashire, England
Wife:   Martha Lord
Husband:   Robert Scholfield
Indexing Project (Batch) Number:   I04791-0
System Origin:   England-EASy
GS Film number:   1545749

Was it common practice in the 1800s to change name from Martha to Mary?   Or could he have become a widower and then remarried?

I can't find a death certificate for Martha prior to the 1841 census.

thank you

Yep - my original problem Rochdale - Robert Scholfield and Martha Lord married 17 May 1785

Manchester - Robert Scholfield and Martha Bolton - both of Manchester married 23 October 1786

I'll check teh Didsbury burial.

I had better get to bed it's 1a!

Hello all,

Found myself getting a bit confused here, so for clarity, here is a reverse timeline for Thomas a shoemaker 1841, 1851, 1861 and a Grocer in 1871 & 1881 who gives his birthplace consistently as Middleton, Lancs.  From his 1843 marriage entry to Ellen Marsden his father was Joseph, deceased by that date and  from the 1841 census (and your own research) his grandfather was Robert, a Farmer, born ~1760 who was married to Mary.  Their address in 1841 was Crompton so the two death records; 1841 & 1845 (Ancestry OPRs) seem a fair match.

Notice that going back in time the surname became Scholfield from the earlier spelling, Schofield.  These don't come up simultaneously on either freebmd or Ancestry, even with phonetic options so you need to search separately.

It may be better to disregard the name Martha for the time being and work back in time systematically, confirming each fact as you go.  Hope this helps a bit.  brigau

1871 & 1881 censuses – Thomas (born 1819 Middleton) & Mary Ann Scholfield were grocers in Manchester
