Hi,
I found this in the newspaper archives:

26 June 1850, marriage report for Thomas Fletcher of Cheetham Hill to "Mary Ann, daughter of Ralph Johnson Esq. of Leek, Staffordshire, and niece to the late William Fynney Johnson Esq., of Fountain Villa, Cheetham Hill"

I think you already have that info on a Rootschat Staffordshire thread for the family?

I'm looking round for Fountain Villa now..

Fountain Villa was up for rent in 1853, described as "situate at Crumpsall, Cheetham Hill"

I think it might have been on Thomas Street in Crumpsall, occupied by a Jacob Thompson Bidder in the 1860s (this from trying to put together Historical Directory entries and Manchester Rate Book entries)

Wow- thanks all - some bedtime reading there.

I have no indication of his age. I only know his brother was Ralph and his sister was Esther (later married to become a "Skitt")

See the Lancashire BMD indexes; although they are not as complete as FreeBMDs they do give the age at death even with these early records.
They have William Fynney Johnson, died 1850 age 68, death registered Cheetham. So that makes his d.o.b. approx 1782.

In the 1841 census there are 8 William Johnsons born 1782 +/- 2 years, living in Lancashire. How to work out if any of these is your William?
We don't even know his place of birth, or if he was living in Lancashire in 1841.

Great find Rolnora  :)

SiCallear, there is a free weekend offer at Find My Past, this weekend 18th-21st September.
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/freeweekend

Strongly advise you to give it a try and enter William Fynney Johnson, with spelling variants (Finny, Finney etc) into the search boxes. There are entries in the Manchester Rate Books and the Cheshire Electoral Registers, for either your William or possibly his son (that name features in the Cheshire registers up to 1860).  Deansgate, Manchester is mentioned for one of them. You also get access to the British Newspaper Archive.

Good luck!

  • Fountain Villa, Cheetham Hill
  • Bath Street, Crumpsall
  • Fountain Street, Crumpsall
  • johnson Square, Crumpsall

I guess I'm looking for a map or maps dated around 1850
