Great sleuthing Osprey (aka Hercule Poirot).

I wonder how the children Ellen and George turned out.

Strange that William Smith should become George Shoal -- or was he George Shoal to start with and had escaped justice where he came from by changing his name and moving? More mysteries!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

The daughter - Ellen Rosina Shole (or whatever spelling they are using)
Deaths Dec 1871
Shoule    Ellen Rosina    5    Abergavenny

George obviously lived on as hes on 1881 census but I looking for him now.

And yes hats off to Osprey thats some great detective work there!

there's a possible George Showell in Ashleworth in Gloucestershire in 1851 HO107/1961 folio 40 pg 8 whose place of birth is given as Waddon so possibly this entry in 1841

Gilberds, Whaddon HO107/355/22 folio 5 pg 10
James Showl 30 ag lb
Mary 30 ag lab
John 9
George 7
all born in county

yet another variant!

Very difficult searching for different spellings of the name isnt it? Ive seen Showell/Shoal/Shoul/Sole lol.....do you think Mary Carter the daughter married in Dec qtr 1874 - either Henry Griffiths or John Price? (Off freebmd) Do any of those fit in with Mary the 1881 census?

Possibly Henry Griffiths - if so she's a long way from home in 1881: Gorton, Lancs. Everyone but Mary b Shrewsbury

Henry Griffiths    27 - railway engine stoker
Mary Griffiths    25 - b Abergavenny
Ellen Griffiths    4
John Griffiths    3
Anne Griffiths    1 mo
