Wondering if this is MAria

County Observer and Monmouthshire Central Advertiser 8th February 1868

CHARGE OF LARCENY. Mary Shoal, Abergavenny was charged with stealing a quantity of potatoes value 3- from a field at Llantillio Pertholey, the property of Mr. John Pocton, farmer. The prosecutor not wishing .o press the case, defendaut was discharged with a caution

I'm afraid Maria may have a rather sullied reputation

Monmouthshire Merlin 29th September 1860

FOOLS AND THEIR MONEY. Samuel Thomas, Govilon, charged an unfortunate, named Maria Carter, with having robbed him of 15s. It would appear that prosecutor accompanied the girl to a house of ill fame on the previous day, and as a consequence an attack was made upon his exchequer. He, however, recovered £2, which had dropped on the floor. Prosecutor did not appear when the case was called on, and on his subsequently showing himself he either would not or could not identify the prisoner.  Prosecutor received a reprimand, and prisoner was discharged.

There are a couple of other appearances that could be her pre marriage, relating to theft and use of abusive language

They must be in Abergavenny somewhere!

meanwhile, think it's like mother like daughter

County Observer and Monmouthshire Central Advertiser

4 Nov 1871
Stealing Potatoes.-Margaret Finley, and Mary Carter, girls about sixteen years of age, were charged with stealing a quantity of potatoes belonging to Mr John Marsh, of the Station Hotel. The prosecutor said that the crop of potatoes had been got up, but a lot had been left on the ground. He had repeatedly cautioned the defendants, whom he had seen in the field before the crop was got up. The frequent trespass was a great annoyance. Cautioned and discharged.

14th February 1874
A LOVE FIGHT. Mary Carter was summoned by Lydia Watkins with assaulting her on Sunday evening last.- From the evidence it appeared that complainant was walking up the Monmouth-road in company with a young man who had been recently paying his addresses to Miss Carter. Defendant met them, and they had some words concerning the young gentleman, when Carter gave complainant some slaps on the face. Defendant admitted the blows, but said that complainant spat in her face first, which was denied, and witnesses were called. Carter was fined 1s. and costs.

28 Nov 1874
STEALING WOOD. Mary Carter and Mary Buckley were charged at the instance of William Davies, servant to Miss Smith, the Hill, with stealing a bundle of wood each fro in the premises of Miss Smith at the Hill. Mr Batt said that depredations of the sort were continually made upon the premises of Miss Smith, and it should be stopped. Sentenced to seven days' imprisonment each. One of the prisoners, who had a baby in her arms, cried bitterly, saying she bad only been confined six weeks, and was not fit to go to prison; she was, however removed in custody.
