Hi Ray ...

This marriage is, in fact, missing from the parish register transcriptions for Southleigh (although both Edward and Rachel are included in the index).

The OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) records that the marriage was in October(not December) in the neighbouring parish of Stanton Harcourt.  I have checked the SH baptisms, but there's no sign of Edward there.

Your best bet now would probably be to request a look-up of the OFHS's Baptism Index (1538-1851 and covering about 90% of the county) - see http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/#oxonbapts (scroll upwards for general information on ordering).

Found the following two marriages on the OMI:

30 SEP 1736 - William CARPENTER to Elizabeth HAWKINS at Southleigh
18 DEC 1740 - William CARPENTER (of Southleigh) to Mary LAINCHBERY at Witney

I had a look at the Southleigh PRs to see if there was any further information on the CARPENTER/HAWKINS marriage (eg. witnesses), but there was nothing.  I don't have the Witney PRs  so couldn't check those.

The earliest CARPENTER baptism at Southleigh is in 1737, so William obviously comes from elsewhere, but I did find his burial record:

15 FEB 1789 - CARPENTER, Willm:  100

The Oxfordshire FHS have CD-roms for sale of parish register transcriptions covering the entire county.  You can also find some records on Family Search and Ancestry.

You can also buy a copy of their OMI - a bit expensive (but Christmas is coming!).  Their baptism index is not yet available for purchase as it's incomplete.

Hi
The marriage is entered in the parish records for St Marys Church, Witney where both their names are in the register on 18 Dec 1740 after banns but no other information entered at all.

By way of elimination, I cannot see a baptism for either of them at St Marys at Witney
