Frank Coleman who married Phoebe Gerrard
« on: Saturday 26 September 15 05:04 BST (UK) »
Hiya,
I am seeking more information on Frank Coleman born 8th Feb 1880 London, England and wife Phoebe Gerrard born 1880 London,England married 1907 London, England and then immigrated to Canada.
I can find a record for Frank Coleman coming to Canada but not Phoebe which is strange.
1911 census the Family is in York Toronto with children: Doris born 1908 and Frank born 1909, the 1921 census wrong transcribed as surname Boleman shows another child Albert born 1918 York West Toronto.
I can only find a Mrs Phoebe Coleman on the electoral register in 1963 in Rosedale, Ontario.

Any help would be most welcome and thank you in advance.

Kind Regards
Paul Williams
Looking for Williams (Merthyr) and (Briton Ferry), as well as Abraham (Abercanaid)and Gerrard (Dorset and London)

Hi Paul

Phoebe COLEMAN in 1963 the Electoral register,  Rosedale, Ontario.  Listed right above her, is Frank COLEMAN, retired. They are at 205 Glen Road, Rosedale.  At the same address is Mrs Violet Boomhower, Clerk.

Frank listed with the CEF:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/canadian-expeditionary-force.aspx

Is this Frank's departure from the UK that you have?
20 Apr 1907, Departed Southampton on the SS Celtic, to New York
Frank COLEMAN 27, a Slater, married
On same Ticket Nr and listed alongside him is Joseph GERRARD 21, single, Clerk.

Cheers

Hi Ambly,
Thanks for this update I wonder who Violet is?
I discovered Frank's WW1 documents which are amazing, his wrist injury prevented him going overseas.
Joseph Gerrard was his brother in law. Still cannot there wives travelling across, but 1911 census has just shown me that Joseph's father in law was in Canada, (census says brother in law which is confusing) the one listed on Sophia and Allan border crossing card in 1915.
Many Thanks again
Regards

It was not at all uncommon for a man to  immigrate ahead of the wife - he would go ahead to get work and a home ready. If there were children in such cases, they generally went with the wife but in some cases older boys went with their father.

In this case I would say Frank went ahead with his new, young brother-in-law, Joseph GERRARD.

And Phoebe came over a few months later with her sister-in-law, Joseph's wife. Here she is, leaving England and arriving in Canada:

DEPARTURE FROM ENGLAND
SS Victorian, departed Liverpool 30 Aug 1907, bound for Montreal, Canada
Manifest sorted by Ticket number, so the two women are listed together:
Ticket: 53425
Mrs COLEMAN 21, Wife,
Mrs GERRARD 27, Wife,
(Phoebe was about the same age as Frank. The women's  ages appear to be  written the wrong way round on this UK Manifest)

ARRIVAL in CANADA
SS Victorian, arriving Montreal, Quebec on 7 Sep 1907, out of Liverpool England.
Manifest arranged in surname alpha-order - so Phoebe is listed a page before Mrs Gerrard.
2nd Cabin
Mrs P COLEMAN, 27, married, wife, going to Toronto, to  husband,  Ticket 53425
Mrs GERRARD 21, married, wife, going to Toronto, to  husband, Ticket 53425

Cheers

Hi,

Phoebe's obituary says she died Feb 28 1963 in Toronto.  Wife of Frank Coleman of 205 Glen Rd.  Mother of Mrs. Sydney Hasted (Doris) of Montreal, Frank of Guelph, A. John of Kingston.  Interment St. James Cemetery.

Obit in the Globe and Mail, March 2 1963 and March 4 1963.

Not seeing Frank's obit right now, but it looks like he was alive in 1963.  He isn't listed as "late".

Found Frank's obit.  He died in Kingston on Dec 16 1970.  Husband of the late Phoebe Gerrard.  Father of Mrs S Hasted (Doris) of Toronto, Frank Coleman of Guelph, and Prof A J Coleman of Kingston. Interment St. James Cemetery.

Globe and Mail, Dec 18 1970, page 39.

RK

PS - A J Coleman is most likely a professor at Queen's University in Kingston...
