A 4th Great-uncle Named Thumetha
« on: Tuesday 29 September 15 15:30 BST (UK) »
Just discovered a branch of the family in Tipperary. In some documents, my 4th Great-uncle is named Timothy Stapleton, in others he is named Thumetha Stapleton! It's the same man with the same parents, wife and children. I have looked at some sites that cover more ancient Irish names, but I have found nothing about Thumetha. If it helps, Timothy (Thumetha) Stapleton was born 4 Apr 1813 in Upperchurch, Tipperary. His parents are Richard Stapleton (born abt 1785) and Mary Dempsey (abt 1795). His wife, Catharine Finn born abt 1821. If anyone has any information about that name, I would very much appreciate it if you could pass it on.

Hi There

It looks just like a mistranscription or bad handwriting that lead to that spelling.

The old Irish version of Timothy is Thaddeus ~ Thady for short.

Maybe, but I've run into the same spelling on documents in Ireland and in Baltimore, Maryland. Oh well, not that important, I guess, but it's funny the things that grab you and will not let go. :)

It's possible that a strong Tipperary accent and maybe a lisp could account for it being taken down wrong.

I've certainty never come across it as a variant of Timothy ~ but then again it could be an old variant used locally in his part of Tipperary.

Maybe, Priscilla, maybe. I don't have a date for Catherine's death, but I do have abt 1921 for her birth date. Numbers do lie on occasion, don't they.:)

Wonder if it a variant of the Latin version of Timothy Timotheus.

It is a bit confusing when I research relatives in Roscommon and find Pietro or Marcello! Also found a little evidence that Normans in Tipperary might be part of my family tree. Never gets boring. ;D
