Rosie,

The MOD forms don't define what is meant by "immediate" NOK?!
I would assume that, in the absence of what we would term as immediate family, all nephews and nieces are of equal standing?

Also, the NoK form is only required if he died within the last 25 years.

Thanks KG  ;D

I'll give it a try then.  Yes he did die in the last 25 years  :)

Regarding immediate next of kin, their definition seems to be: "the spouse of a crew member[/soldier], or their children (or parent and sibling where there is no spouse or children)."

Out of interest, anybody have an idea how long it takes to hear back from them? By coincidence I popped two orders in the post today.

My experience is with RN records.

1 took just about a week! ;D
The other, more complicated, one took about 2 months. (Merchant Seaman who died in RN Reserve service)

I have signed as NOK for my Grandfathers brother as I'm not aware of anyone else related that is alive, not that I've checked in any significant degree. At the end of the day it is a data protection box ticking arse covering exercise. If another relative complains they can say 'well they signed as the next of kin'. They can not check verify every application they receive, if they did the waiting time to receive the records would be around 3 years.

My experience was getting both my parents records but Mum was still alive then and she signed the forms so it was only a few weeks.

As for NOK, I shall presume all nieces/nephews of my uncle are equal.  Thank you all for your comments.

Thanks for your feedback. I've only sent in "general enquirerers" (rather than NOK) forms for two grand-uncles of mine, and I didn't have any regiment/service numbers. No doubt that'll all slow it up somewhat, but hopefully not too much!

When I sent for my father's records my mother was still alive, and as the soldier's spouse she could request the service records for free. They took only a few weeks to arrive iirc.

The information sheet (part two of the application form) is where the soldier's details go. The more you can fill in on this sheet the better.
