Asylum near Allonby
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 12:48 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there was an asylum or similar institution near Allonby, Cumbria. One of my ancestors died somewhere in Allonby in 1889 from alcoholism. The address looks like an institution but very difficult to make out. I have read that alcoholism was considered a mental illness and that people were locked up in asylums accordingly. She had only just got married a couple of months before.

I think you'll have to scan or photograph the relevant part of the certificate and post it here.

I can't see anything obvious on old maps.  :-\
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Might have got this wrong. The place on the death certificate is Allonby followed by three capital letters which are difficult to make out. However, I have been doing some checking on the person who was with her when she died, Sophia Walker. From the 1891 census she and her husband were running the Grapes Hotel in Allonby. So if they were there in 1889 then was Louisa, an alcoholic, staying at a public house during her final days?

Are they USD - Urban Sanitary District
or RSD - Rural Sanitary District

Thank you for your response.

It does look like RSD. What does that imply.

There are no implications, It is a bit like a local council area is today  :)

It was quite common for a neighbour to be with someone when they died and be the informant on the death certificate
