ARIS / AYRIS Marriage In Garford 1752
« on: Monday 05 October 15 08:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,
  Trying to trace a marriage of John ARIS and Jane **** who lived in Marcham and had their first child in 1753. I've been told that they may have married in Garford in 1752 but unfortunately OFHS do not publish the Garford PRs. Would be grateful for a lookup should anybody have access to them please.

Many thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,
As you say the Garford PRs aren't available and I'm not sure why. However, you might find the following of interest;

Wootton (Berks) marriage;
14-10-1750 John AYRES - m - Jane Green, botp, married in Magdelen College  by Banns
and this baptism;
7-7-1751 Elizabeth Ayres d/o John & Jane

In Marcham I have found these baptisms;
27-5-1753 Jn Aris s/o John & Jane
13-7-1755 Mary "   d/o   "          "
11-9-1757 Jane  "    "     "          "
26-12-1759Wm. "   s/o   "          "
27-6-1762 Tho   "     "    "          "
21-10-1764 Ann "   d/o   "          "
1-4-1768 Rd.     "    s/o   "          "

Couldn't see any burials for John or Jane.

For the record ...

The parish of Garford was originally in Berkshire and became part of Oxfordshire in the early 1970s.  As such, the registers have not been transcribed by the OFHS and are not included in their BMD indexes.

The Garford marriage registers would only seem to date from the mid 1800s (earlier records included with Marcham), although there would seem to be surviving Bishop's Transcripts covering the period 1740-50 held at the Wiltshire & Swindon RO in Trowbridge.

Marcham parish registers have been transcribed by the OFHS and are available on their CD-rom Ref. AB03.  Additionally, baptism and marriage records for 1607-1833 are available on Family Search (Batch Nos. C019872 and M019872 respectively).  Marcham is also included on the OFHS's North Berkshire Marriage Index.

Hi Pennie,
      Thanks for the info. I do have the PRs for Marcham but no sign of a marriage there. If the Garford PRs are not in existence or unavailable I suppose I've hit the proverbial brick wall.

Thanks again.

Hi Chris,

Have you discarded the John & Jane marriage I listed in 1750 in Wootton?

The baptisms in Wootton & Marcham seem to follow in sequence.

No, Alan. Sorry I haven't discarded that. I was so taken with all the children in Marcham (I only had 4 of the 7) that I overlooked your Wooton marriage. I'll look at it now. Thanks. Would be useful to see if there is a Garford marriage - 2 John and Jane AYRIS back then would be highly unlikely don't you think ?

Thanks again.

Alan,
    There is also a marriage between a John and Jane in Cumnor in 1750 so somehow I've got to decide which one is mine.

Hi Chris,
I think that Pennie has "hit it on the head"  when she says that Garford didn't appear to have its own registers till the mid 1800s.
Looking at the Berks RO  list of original registers they hold, marriages are only available from 1839-1840 with Baptsisms 1733-1938. So I would suggest that they were recorded in the Marcham registers, being an adjoing parish, as mentioned by Pennie.
http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/family-history/parish-register-guide/?letter=g#results

Wootton is only a small distance away from Marcham with Abingdon intervening, so its quite possible that the marriage I listed is the one.

Hope this helps.

Chris,
Just got your last message Re-Cumnor.
Unfortunately the transcripts I have for that parish have a gap 1681 - 1755 !! would you believe it.

The Berks RO may have the originals for that date - suggest you contact them, but they do charge for the info.
