Not buying, renting!

Those are entries from the Tithe survey of the parish in 1838. 266 is a House and Garden and 267 an adjoining orchard. The total having an area of 1 Rood, 13 perches (about 1/3 of an acre).

The site was outside the village, about half a mile to the west. If you go to 51 24' 22"N, 2 41' 10"W on Google Earth, it's the small triangular field in the fork of the road. The house is no longer there, it was north of the existing shed, near the gateway. The garden was on the west side of the house, it appears to still be fenced off separately.

Thanks for that - gives me an insight into him (and I presume his family as well as he's widowed before he appears on any census living alone)
