In the 1841 census, adult ages of 15 years and over should have been rounded down to the nearest 5 years. So someone born in 1817 may be shown as aged 25. That would explain the ages that you’ve found.

You will see the surname is spelt JEFFREY (not Jeffery). Maybe try that on ScotlandsPeople?

thank you for your help
its one of those names that is easily mispelt , my father in laws father appears on the census of 1891 as john smith jeffreys - im also having to sift through jeffries, jaffery ,jeffary and even geffery
i got the transcription from findmypast -at a price :(
not 100% certain this is the right man as i have a second one that im looking into too - im trying to cross check the children and its looking like theres 2 wives  :-[
