If Dorothy was purporting to be a married woman at the time of the child's birth then the husband's name would automatically have been entered as the fathers name.

Dorothy appears to present herself to the registrar as a single woman and the child's births is recorded without a father's name.

If she had turned up at the registrars and wanted to include the father's name even though unmarried, he would have had to attend as well.

Thank you dawnsh for your help. It has helped me so much.

The NZ address appears in the Name, surname of mother under Dorothy's name and a London address is recorded in the informants column under the informants name (who was Dorothy).

It's a strange set up  ;)

Looks like she was planning to move abroad even as the baby was being born.

I thought that, Dawn, and yet she married in England the following year and then had another daughter in England the year after that, before moving.
Plans change, though.

Hi everyone.
Well, there was no stepfather!

The “stepfather” was actually her biological father! Thank to DNA the truth was uncovered ☺️

Thank you all for your help.
