Hi,

One of my ancestors, William White, lived at Dalziel Cemetery according to some census records & his death certificate (grave digger, Cemetery Keeper, Cemetery Superintendent).  The 1901 Census has the Civil Parish as Dalziel but the Ecclesiastical Parish as Bothwell & Quad Sacra Parish as Holytown.

Would I be right in assuming that 'Dalziel Cemetery' is different to the former 'Dalziel Parish Cemetery' (now Globe Cemetery) that this post focusses on?  I looked at maps and Globe Cemetery is located within Motherwell rather than Bothwell or Holytown.

thanks
Bella

Hi Bella,

They were one and the same place. The Globe (aka Dalziel cemetery) is situated on the far side of the river Calder and is therefore technically in the parish of Bothwell. It was opened in 1876 after Dalziel parish council purchased the land from Bothwell parish. The gravediggers and superintendent's houses were situated just over the bridge at the entrance to the cemetery, so they were also in Bothwell parish but would have had a Motherwell address.

I wouldn't trouble myself too much about the quad sacra parish, it doesn't really help in any way.

I'll never understand why Dalziel put their cemetery way down there, it was a nightmare to reach, especially without motorized transport, there was plenty of other farmland in the parish at that time. I think they picked the Globe (although it wasn't called that in 1876) because it was, or had been, a bleachfield and had probably fallen into disuse, so they would have paid much less than if it had been good arable land.

Thanks Lodger.  That all makes sense.

I've just started looking at family history in recent months and am focussing on Whites for a bit.  William's death certificate lists Colin White and Margaret Jackson as parents but I've not looked into them yet (I have found a birth record for Colin White in Glasgow in 1803, son of William White and Janet Bryce but not confirmed whether this is 'my' William White's father).

William is my Great-great-great Grandfather.

His wife Mary appears to have ended up in Lanark District Asylum after William's death - going back has unearthed quite a few sad stories.

Is there a headstone for William and/or Mary at the Globe Cemetery?  Most of my relatives (paternal and maternal) are in Airbles Cemetery.

best wishes
Bella

Hi Lodger,

this is incredibly helpful - thank you!  I'm off to do more research  :)

I know that WILLIAM WHITE and MARY FAIRLEY'S son, ANDREW WHITE, had a son called THOMAS HAMILTON McBAIN (or McBEAN) WHITE and it would make sense that this child was named after Andrew's brother, Thomas.

It's unfortunate that Mary's parents aren't mentioned as that's one of the brick walls I've come up against but there are plenty of other avenues to now try regarding her family with William.

thanks again,
Bella

Thanks to Lodger's information, I was able to find out a little more about the White family.  Today seemed like a fitting day to post as it's the anniversary of Andrew White's marriage to Isabella (Bella) McLeod.  The marriage took place 18th July 1882 at Rosskeen Farm (Ross & Cromarty) where Bella's father, Kenneth, was a shepherd.  Lodger's mention of a Robert White led to the discovery that Andrew's brother Robert married Bella's sister, Eliza, in 1885, again in Rosskeen.

Andrew and Robert's father, William, was in the army (Royal Scots Greys/2nd Dragoons).  Family stories link him to Crimean War but I've not yet subscribed to sites that have military records so that'll be an area of research for future and may help me pin down the birthplace of some of William's sons who weren't born in Scotland.

I found the birth and death certificates for Robert and Eliza's first two children - both of whom died very young as mentioned in post above and both named Beatrice.  Their other children (those I've found) were Kenneth McLeod (1890), William (1894), Robert Donald McLeod (1895), Colin (1897) and Harry (1902) and Elizabeth Margaret (known as Elma?) (1908).  I assume no record of the children born from 1890 onwards because they survived beyond the date that the Globe Cemetery closed?

Additionally, the post from Lodger with note of memorial inscription records William's wife as Mary Early whereas I had her surname noted as 'Fairley' (from asylum records) so that may help me find out more about her background in England/Ireland.

Thanks again Lodger for the very useful information,
Bella
