St Marys Athlone Baptism 1876
« on: Wednesday 21 October 15 03:52 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone  ;D

I found a RC baptism in Athlone Westmeath in 1876, on rootsireland.  It seems to be the baptism of my great grandfather, but it is full of transcription errors.

I looked on the NLI-CPR site and from what I can tell this must be St Marys parish.  Is this the only option?

I could not see many 1876 record options for St Marys Athlone on the NLI site and the few available didn't SEEM to include my great grandfathers baptism.

I am wondering how I find out where the rootsireland transcript is from?  If it is not in the NLI records, who would have it?  Why would the NLI have some but not all available records for St Marys?

Advice appreciated.

Angela

To update, I found the email address (hopefully) for the family history foundation of the area, and have emailed them to see if they have a photocopy of the original record.

Many of the NLI images are old transcripts of the registers.
RootsIreland transcriptions are from the registers still held in the church, they often have a lot more information than the NLI images.
Fairly sure RootsIreland do not hold any images of the registers.

I have several records from RootsIreland that are not in the NLI images, also so far all the records of my family have more detail on RI than NLI plus one is missing from NLI.

Looking at the National Library site, www.nli.ie, it states that they hold, for St Mary's Athlone:

Baptisms: 1st January 1813 to 24th September 1826
and          4th February 1827 to 17th March 1827

Perhaps the remaining Baptisms are still with the parish?

Thanks everyone for your replies.  The details of the person are here:

(however now that the NLI records are up, I realise that they don't include data for the year of my g-grandads baptism)

A further clarification - he wont (or should not) have a civil birth registration nearby the date of his baptism because he should have been born about 11-13 years earlier in India.

Given the hand writing in some registers and variations in spelling at the time I'd say that transcript is near perfect.

The question for you is, is it the correct person.

Well its tricky but
The baptism states Edmund was born in India which would be true of my Edward.  I already knew his parents should be Abraham Harrison and Harriet Hodgson.  Except Harriet died in India prior to the family returning to Ireland.

I know my Abraham Harrison was in Athlone at the time because he remarried there in 1881 and died there in 1884.

I have Abraham with a son Edmund Harrison in a north dublin workhouse in 1872 and 1875.

So Edmund is the son Abraham..

How he became Edward as an adult is unknown. (of it this is where an error in my timeline occurs).

But he joined the Army as Edward Harrison, in 1884, giving his father Abraham Harrison of Irishtown Athlone as NOK... then abraham died is struck out and a known/expected sibling is given as NOK.

There are issues to resolve to be sure.

I have seen the names Edward & Edmu(o)nd being used interchangeably !
