SAYLE pre 1881 census
« on: Wednesday 13 July 05 22:41 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about the following.

James Sayle born c1848.  Father = John Sayle - Shoemaker

In October 1880 James married Elizabeth Margaret Cowley (Her father was Thomas Cowley - a miner)

She was previously married to William Cowin (married c1866).
Their children are listed (mistranscribed?) in 1881 as:
William CAWE 13
Robert H. CAWE 9
Emily CAWE 8
Urenia CAWE 5

Any information from previous censuses for James Sayle or Elizabeth Margaret Cowley/Cowin would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

1861 census:

Address: Cottage, Bride, IOM

John Sayle   abt 1823    Bride, Head Shoemaker and Parish Clerk
Susan Sayle   abt 1828    Bride, Wife    Bride
Ellen J Sayle   abt 1855    Bride, Daughter    Bride
Henry Sayle   abt 1857    Bride, Son    Bride
John Sayle   abt 1852    Bride, Son    Bride
Susan Sayle   abt 1859    Bride, Daughter    Bride
Way Sayle   abt 1851    Bride, Son    Bride

(I don’t think that name is Way, but it is hard to read.)

There is a James Sayle born Bride, ag lab on the farm of William Teare or Tease, but it clearly says he is 18, not 13. Only ne I can see.

1871 census
Address: Glentruan Cottage, Bride.
John Sayle   abt 1823    Head, shoemaker
Susan Sayle   abt 1827    Wife, dressmaker
Susan Gawne   abt 1786    Ireland   Mother-in-law
Ellen Jane Sayle   abt 1855    Daughter
Henry Sayle   abt 1857    Son, apprentice
Susan Sayle   abt 1860    Daughter

Mother-in-law a bonus!

This is the only possible thing I can find for Elizabeth and family (though it doesn’t seem quite right):

1871 census

Address: Close Moar, Lonan, IOM
William Cowin   abt 1844 , IOM   Head    Lonan, lead miner
Elizabeth Cowin   abt 1844 , IOM   Wife
Ann Jane Cowin   abt 1865, IOM    Daughter
Elizabeth Cowin   abt 1869, IOM    Daughte
Jemima Cowin   abt 1870, IOM    Daughter
William Cowin   abt 1867, IOM    Son

Cheers,

Ros

Many, many thanks Ros

I certainly wasn't expecting a reply so soon.

I had made a note about a John Sayle from the 1881 census and wondered if he was the shoemaker I was looking for.   On there his wife is Susan, and William is a Shoemaker so I guess he completed his apprenticeship to his father's satisfaction!

I haven't got much at all on Elizabeth yet, I'll keep the info you have kindly found for me safe even though, as you say, it doesn't seem right - you never know, it may make sense one day.

Thanks again for your help - it has renewed my drive to track down my elusive Manx connection.

Best wishes

Sarah

Many thanks for looking anyway Catherine!

I am pretty sure I have just found the details for Elizabeth's death:

June Quarter 1892 - SAYLE, Elizabeth Margaret age 49 (Ulverston)

She was in Ulverston (Dalton in Furness) on the 1891 Census living with her 'step-son' William Cowin (24) and her 2 children Annie Elizabeth aged 8 (listed as Lizzie on the census) and John James aged 3.  James Sayle - her husband died May 1890 in Dalton aged 42 - I just got his death certificate this week!

I am not sure what happened to the 2 young children with both their parents dead, I suppose they were placed in an orphanage, but John turns up on the 1901 census as an inmate at the North Lancashire Reformatory for Boys. Annie Elizabeth marries age 16 (and one month) though claims to be 17 on the certificate - which may be something to do with the fact she gave birth to her first son 18 days after the wedding!?  I'm not sure how getting pregnant at 15 was viewed in society back then but I'm guessing that year made a difference.

Thanks again for looking

Best wishes

Sarah
