William Rushworth
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 17:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm trying to find out more about my ancestor William Rushworth. The details I have so far are as follows:
Jane Rushworth b. 1830 in Nottingham, parents Joseph Rushworth and Sarah Hart. I think Joseph was born 1810 in Nottingham to William Rushworth and Martha Betney and died in 1831.
William married Martha in 1791 in Newark. I have tried to find William and Martha on the 1841 and 1851 census.
I have found the following:
1841 St Mary Nottinghamshire HO107/869/6/20 p 32

1851: HO107/2132/387 p 11

I was just wondering if anyone thinks this might be my William or if there are any burials or burials of Martha suggesting he married again?
Thanks.

Joseph's baptism; parents William and Martha Rushworth
1811 01 21   NOTTINGHAM St Mary

the Joseph Rushworth who died in 1830 is listed as being 23 years old; of course he could have been baptised at age 4 rather than near birth so it's possible.

Marriage at NEWARK St Mary Magdalene
1791 09 07   William   RUSHWORTH   Martha   BETNEY

There are 8 baptisms listed to this couple at Notts St Marys between 1792 and 1811 then one outlier in 1826 which lists the address as Mansfield Road and William as a cabinet maker. Because of the long gap I would wonder if the 1826 baptism was actually a different family or different generation.

There is only 1 adult burial for a Martha Rushworth:
1835 12 13   Martha   RUSHWORTH   age 73   RADFORD St Peter

there is a baptism for a Martha Betney in 1765 in Carlton so the age wouldn't be too far out. There is a William Rushworth in Radford who was a cabinet maker and whose YOB would fit with a son called William bapt to William (snr) and Martha, so it's possible that Martha was staying with her son in Radford and hence was buried there.

However --- just to throw a spanner in the works - there is no listing for a Jane born to Joseph Rushworth. There is however one for parents John and Sarah Rushworth:

1830 03 14   NOTTINGHAM St Mary      Jane, daughter of John RUSHWORTH and Sarah      father's occ Joiner; abode Meynel Row

There is only 1 baptism for a child of Joseph Rushworth, and that's a son called John in 1827 (also Notts St Mary).  Joseph is listed as a joiner, address Mansfield Road.

Hi,
Jane was Joseph's daughter, apparently his name was mistranscribed on her baptism but I will send for her marriage certificate just to confirm.

So assuming Joseph is her father and William his father and they are all cabinet makers and assuming William married again, could that be him in 1841? If so, does it say he was born abroad?

I think it just has a "n" in 1841- not born in county. I think ( but not sure) that if people were born abroad it said that.

Hi Burto,

Is this the marriage of your Jane Rushworth to William Cross at St Marys Church Nottingham on 31 Dec 1849 if so I can get you a copy from Nottingham Archives saves you buying it, and any other marriages you would like.
