police station in Elswick, NBL

1901 census shows my relative living/working at Arthur's Hill Police Station in Elswick. Does anyone have any information regarding it's original existance and whether the building still stands? I have checked several web sites with no luck.

Thanks for your reply & checking for me.

From further research I have found out that the building was pulled down some time ago but apparently there is a book held at one of the libraries there in Newcastle titled "Bygone Arthur's Hill and Westgate By A.D.Walton (published 1998) ISBN 1-85795-084-4" which may have a photo of the station in it. The next time you find yourself in one of the libraries around the area would you be able to check it out for me? Sorry I don't have the name of the specific library or the address.

The records for Newcastle Police are at the Tyne & Wear Archives, Newcastle and are in 4 large boxes (each box has about 100+ records), unfortunately they are not indexed and are not even in alphabetical order and apparently charge an arm and a leg for parking. Sounds like these people at T & W Archives have a monopoly on the area. A bit sad really considering the hard work and harsh conditions our ancestors lived in to allow these people to get a job in the first place.
Cheers
Bob

This is fantastic Michael, thank you so much. More than what I could have asked for with the details and all. Sorry that you you had to purchase the book to look at it and I do hope that you will get some other use from it.
Much appreciated
Bob

Thanks mate but I live in Australia, the postage will cost more than the book!
