A friend has an ancestor who is described as a "Mile Man", he was a railway worker in Ireland in the 1850s- 60s, any idea what this is?

He was probaly the same as a lengthman who maintained a specific section, i.e. length of the permanent way. See https://marketlavingtonmuseum.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/a-railway-lengthman/

According to Irish newspaper reports it should be  Railway Milesman. Google  "Railway Milesman"

Patrick worked as a Railway Miles Man (he looked after a specified number of railway track miles on the Galway /Clifden Railway 1895-1935) http://www.oughterardheritage.org/content/place/townlands_of_oughterard/leam-west/leam-west
