Information & Record Archives for Mary Tavy Orphanage & Devonport Orphanage
« on: Wednesday 28 October 15 10:54 GMT (UK) »
Dear Listers
We understand at the outbreak of WW2 the Royal Devonport Dockyard Orphanage was relocated to Mary Tavy Orphanage. We are trying to locate information back to 1911-1918 in order to discover when a great uncle (George Holman) was admitted and when he left.
Our current enquiries have not been successful in terms of records and where they are held as the building was sold and now have been replaced by private buildings.
We have tried the Plymouth & Devon record office and the Dockyard Heritage Centre with no success.
Any help or advice would be welcomed
Thank you

Hi Listers
I understand tha the orphanage moved to Peter Tavy and no longer exists but that my relative was an inmate in Devonport Orphanage  in 1911 he was aged 12.  Any ideas how I can find out when he left. He then served in the army an died in 1917 but have a few gaps we are trying to fill
Thanks

His mother died in 1906 so likely admission would be around that time

Notice this was first posted 2015.  Have you contacted the Records Office to see if any records still exist?

The orphanage was at South Warne, Station Road, Mary Tavy. During the 1950s my mother used to attend as a visiting hair dresser.
