PENN FAMILY
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 05:43 BST (UK) »
There

I'm searching the PENN family, of Kinlet Shropshire.

My ggggfather, William PENN, born about 1782, and married Anne Bytheway in 1807.

I'd be grateful if you could shed some light on William's parents.

Thanks a million.

Hi,

The transcribed Parish Register for Kinlet doesn’t contain the Christening of William PENN in 1782 so the submitted record on the IGI should, as you may know, be treated with caution.
I assume you have seen Williams marriage and the Christening of the children on the IGI. Additional information given in the transcript includes;
Joseph BYTHEWAY was a witness at the marriage.
All the Christenings list William as a Labourer, at various locations around Kinlet.

These burials may be of interest. Your William & Anne PENN seemed to be the only family of that name around Kinlet at that time. The locations match those given at the Christenings.

7 Jan 1810. Sarah PENN, inft. of Woodgate.
4 April 1824. Edward PENN, inft of Norton’s End Lodge.
20 March 1827. Henry PENN, inft. of Lodge.
20 March 1829. Harriet PENN, age 3 of Lodge Norton’s End. Burnt to death by her clothes taking fire.
15 Jan 1834. Thomas PENN, age 13 of Kinlet.

Hope it helps,
Gwynne.

Dear Gwynne

Thanks so much for all that info.  I really do appreciate it.

Any suggestion how I would go about finding William Penn's birth date as well as his parents???

I notice most of the children of William and Anne were born in Norton's End Loge or other entries show The Lodge.

Would this mean that they were all living at a boarding lodge??

Would you be able to shed some light on James Penn born in 1816, son of William and Anne.

James married a Maria Westwood, formerly Webb.

They had 3 children, Dora(h) born in 1855, James born in 1862 and William born in 1865.

Just curious as James would've been a father for the first time at age 39 and then again at 46 and 49????  Rather late in life for that time.

I look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate any further info..

Kind regards
KIM ;D

Have you seen the marriage register? Perhaps that gives his fathers name. Did William make it onto the 1841 or 1851 census?

I assume the Lodge refers to a cottage or perhaps a former hunting Lodge in the grounds of a large house. You can actually see that Lodge on an old map.
Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk
then type in co-ordinates 371500,282018 then click on the Co-ordinate button and Search. After the map has loaded, select Enlarged view.
You will see Norton's End and the Lodge towards the top right corner.

Hope it helps,
Gwynne.
