!851 Selina Woodier
« on: Friday 30 October 15 10:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find where Selina Woodier was in 1851. She was born in 1837 in Foleshill to Thomas and Dorothy Woodier. In the 1861 census she is living with them in Cromwell Street but is absent from the rest of the family in 1851. There is a record of a Selina Woodier marrying a James Mills in 1855 in Coventry which doesn't tie up with her appearance as a unmarried daughter in 1861.

I would welcome any information or thoughts others have on this puzzle.

Best wishes

Yes that is her. Many thanks, I must be getting old!  :)
She should be 14 years. Does it say what her occupation was?

Many thanks. It still leaves the problem of what happened to her after 1861 and who the 1855 marriage is of. There is also a death of a Selina Mills in 1856 in Coventry. Selina is such an unusual name.

The marriage to James Mills on 24 December 1855 at St Michael & All Angels, Coventry is on freereg but does not give fathers names. Both James & Selina are 20 years old.  The witnesses were Richard Woodier and Sarah Reaney.

The burial index states that the Selina Mills who died Coventry area 1856 was 20  :-\  There are a couple of women with that name and approx age in Coventry on the 1851 census

Selina Woodier and James Mills were both 20 when they married at St Michael, Coventry on 24 Dec 1855.  This looks about right for your Selina.

I see that the unmarried daughter appearing as "Selenia" in 1861 is only 20, and therefore of an age to be the same person who appears in other records as Lavina/Lavinia Woodier.  It might be worth your considering the possibility that it was Lavina still at home in 1861, albeit incorrectly enumerated, and that her elder sister Selina had married and (possibly) died by then.

Lavina married William Henry Wilson at St Michael Coventry in 1863.

Selina Mills of Red Lane, Cromwell St was recorded as aged 20 when she was buried at St Peter, Coventry on 30 November 1856.

Red Lane was also the abode of Selina Woodier and James Mills when they married in 1855, and of Lavina Woodier and her bridegroom when they married in 1863.
