Hi Roma

Just looked for your William, he is not listed in Chiddingly, but this family is - quite possible it is related. - I am amazed at the amount of info it gives in this particular instance.

East Sussex Record Office - PAR 292/37/1

Mr Thomas Guys House adjoining the Six Bells

MILHAM Richard, 34, Head, Bricklayer and Painter
............ Sarah, 32, wife
............ Elizabeth, 6, daughter
............ Mary, 3, daughter
............ Richard, 1, daughter

Put it on the back burner for future reference

Hi Chris

Thanks very much for that. I am sure there must be a connection somewhere as all the family appear to be Bricklayers. As you say a lot of information I thought the old censuses only showed occupants and not always names.

Thanks again
Roma

In answer to your question

"I thought the old censuses only showed occupants and not always names."

Copies were made of the enumerators returns in some parishes and preserved in the Parish Chest.

In this instance, this information had been copied into notebooks and were found amongst the papers of the 'Overseers of the Poor' in the parish chest, and they list every inhabitant in the parish - other annotations have been added at a later date such as subsequent details of death, etc.

The notebooks are in the East Sussex Record Office under PAR292/37/1

hope that explains it

Dear Chris

Thank you very much for the information on the 1841 Census, that takes me back another generation.

Also thanks for the information regarding the early census, this is first time I have had any information before 1841. I must get to the Record Office and see what they have. A winter's job too busy in Summer.

Thank you once again
Roma

This appears to be the only marriage of a William Milham to a Mary between 1798 and 1837, so it looks as though it could be yours

Sussex Marriage:
Location: Ewhurst, East Sussex,  Date: 25 Dec 1810:
Groom: William MILLHAM
Bride: Mary BAKER

Hi Chris

I'll keep it with other records I've amassed and see where it fits in. There are a lot of MILEHAM's in Ewhurst but not so many in Chiddingly who seem harder to find.

Thank you once again
Roma

Hi Roma

I was just following some of this information through on Richard Milham.

Chris1066 points out that he was married to a Sarah with 3 children.

I've done a search and found that a Richard Milham born 1834 from Chiddingly (fits with son of John and Sarah Milham in Chiddingly) is also detailed in the 1861 and 1871 census' as follows:

1861

Can you include the full census reference please - Global Moderator
Ringles Cross, Uckfield, Sussex

Richard MILHAM - Head, 27 b.1834, Chiddingly, (Bricklayer)
Mary - Wife, 27 b.1834, Camberwell, Surrey

1871

Can you include the full census reference please - Global Moderator
Hawkshurst ? Cottages, East Hoathly, Sussex

Richard MILHAM - Head, 37 b.1834, Chiddingly, (Bricklayer/Farmer)
Mary - Wife, 37 b.1834, Camberwell, Surrey

So could this be useful?
