Re James "Dunany" O'Kane

Derry Journal 26 Jan 1903

"The death was recently announced of old James O'Kane, known in his district as "The King of Formil" He died at a ripe old age. Formil is a peculiarly situated townland, near the summit of the mountains between Garvagh and Dungiven. Though it is enclosed between the parishes of Dungiven and Errigal,it belongs to neither of these but to the parish of Bovevagh, from the mass of which, it is separated by the entire breath of the parish if Dungiven. It is also peculiar in having a reighing house and monarch of its own. The kingship devolves,it is stated, upon deceased nephew (Daniel O'Kane) but it is undrstood that there is a rival claimant to the throne"

Daniel obviously saw off any claimant because he was known as the King of Formil for the rest of his life!

There are some interesting snippets in the paper - I liked the one involving Jeremiah Mullan in the Coleraine Chronicle, 3 June 1871.

(Browsing the area on the old Irish maps brought back memories of a work related trip to Coleraine some 20 years ago and staying in Portrush).

Best of luck with the search

Does it give a townland? (I'm interested in a Jeremiah Mullan but not the one belonging to Family Routes)
