Aha! that would explain it. There mustn't have been a priest in the parish for a few weeks. So George must have been baptised somewhere else as they wouldn't have waited that long to baptise him. Thanks aghadowey.  Just noticed there is a Coolnasillagh in Errigal...that's a possibility too.

Two townlands of Coolnasillagh listed here..  Different Parishes!!

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

The missing months apart, have you checked the registers for any other occurrence of "Coolnaserran" as an address?

http://maps.ehsni.gov.uk/Mapviewer/Default.aspx

I've had a look at Garvargh on the 1829 and 1857-1832 maps - cannot see a "Coolnaserran" - but one or two beginning "Cool....." in the locale.

Have checked Irish newspapers on line - no instance of "Coolnaserran"

He may still have been baptised there but the entries didn't get written in the register.

Familysearch has him as Mullon...he is actually O'Mullan. baptised in Garvagh..so,yes,he must have been baptised there.

Thanks hanes teulu..yes I've googled and checked but, like you, I can't find an exact match. I was hoping to find the births of some other older siblings by narrowing down the townland. The younger ones were baptised in Dungiven.

That's an extracted birth record not a baptism. The '0478' refers to an entry on page 478 of the civil registration. It's more likely that the surname is really Mullan in the register but has been misread.

It's the 1st one in Errigal Parish (OP did mention Errigal and the start of this thread and birth registration is Garvagh sub-district).

George's sister,my grandmother and her father are variously noted as O'Mullan, Mullan and Mullin on her marriage cert!!! They're definitely O'Mullan but the 'O' was dropped willy-nilly!

That map shows the location of Coolnasillagh as southeast of Garvagh off the Carhill Road but it's actually in the opposite direction northwest of Garvagh!

Sometimes it's hard to beat local knowledge. It's a lovely afternoon and I could actually walk there in a short time  ;D

Have checked the baptismal registers for any occurrence of "Coolnaserran". Couldn't find another occurrence. Plenty of entries under "Domicilium" for "Coolcoskeran" - presumably "Coolcoscreaghan"?

Noticed the "Domicilium" is not recorded in the registers after May 1860.

What would have been the source for the address on the civil record?
