William Fielding post 1891
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 12:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
These Fieldings and their sad lives are driving me to the poor house!  This chap was born to Agnes Fielding and Robert Bruce in 1848 and baptised in 1851. I don't have the OPR but I'm pretty confident there was no marriage.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYN7-CY8

In 1851 William Bruce is with his mother Agnes Fielding ('Feiding') and grandparents, James Fielding and Elizabeth Millar are all living at 88 High Street, Fordoun. After James dies in 1857 it looks like the family moved to Govan. From 1861 onwards William is down as Fielding and can be tracked through the census until 1891 at which point he's still single and living with his mom on Thistle Street, Govan.

Agnes dies in 1893 in Greenock and William signs the cert certificate. I can't find William in 1901 neither can I find a death certificate for him at Scotlandspeople. The William living Greenock is not him neither is the one living Maypole in Ayrshire - these men's deaths can be found on SP. In 1881 these two men and my William can all be accounted for in the census.

Jen, as you mention/think, the 1851 census shows Agnes as unmarried and living with parents in Fordoun. FreeCen has a 100% coverage now of Kincardineshire to pick up now on the marital status info.

Thanks Monica - good to see on Freecen the marital status listed and the name properly transcribed  :)

I've had more problems with the name Fielding than any other name I've worked on. I had been using F*L*G to search but that meant I missed Fielden and Fieldane! Thankfully not a common name in Scotland.

I have a Laurens Eric Felldin. I used F*ld*n* to look for him. It seems that he might have been Swedish - apparently Felldin is a Swedish surname!
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Forfarian,
I resorted to just using F* with a margin of 10 years for his birth but nada on the 1901 Scottish census.

These Fieldings are unlike any other branch in the family - I have Alexander Fielding marrying Janet Hendry in 1787 in Edzell - I've worked through all their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren (honest!) to the best of my ability but can't make any connections to any other Fieldings.

I wonder if he emigrated after the death of his mother?

Hi Jen,

Just a thought.

Have you tried the 1911 census on SP? I Had a whole family who did not appear on one particular census but I found them all on the next one.

If that's a no go then perhaps he did emigrate.

Hope you solve it.

Hi,
Many thanks for the suggestions, on the 1911 census the only WF of approximately the correct age is the one living Maybole in Ayrshire. Dorrie you are so right though often when you can't find someone on one census by jumping to the next they appear!

J11 I never thought about emigration...seems odd a single man to up sticks at the age of 44 but maybe after his mother died he was up for a bit of adventure.
