I've looked at the marriage certificate but it's not him. I downloaded the McKellar one but Ev's correct it must be the same marriage as the GROS numbers are the same. I should have remembered Margaret McKellar from the 1917 death certificate of the other William Fielding! So an English marriage? Sept quarter 1897, West Derby to a Margaret Guthrie - that should be OK given the time lag with the directories.  :)

So, William dies in 1900 and Margaret's showing as a widow on the 1901 census - no children. That now leaves me with only one great great grandson of Alexander and Janet with the name Fielding to follow through on.

Well Monica it would appear not  ;D....I've just found a marriage certificate for old William! He married in 1892 a year before his mother's death. His wife was called Margaret D Merac, daughter of a Robert Merac and a Margaret Donaldson. Twists and turns indeed Ev!

Monica, I think I may have to presume the English marriage is another William Fielding to another Margaret. In 1901 the widow Margaret in Liverpool is showing age 46 born Glasgow - in 1891 Margaret Merac is showing age 37 born Glasgow I have to admit she has switched occupations from 'leather machinist' to 'Chandler & Hardware'.

I'm going to go on Mastermind - topic 'Scottish Fieldings 1700 to 1900'!
