Hi Ev,
The address reads ?Blackhall? Greenock (snip attached). I think a bar would be very good - he was a shopman in a spirit shop in 81 and 91 ;D. I'm presuming the spirit was of the drinking kind....

There were, as far as I can establish, only three William Fieldings in Scotland born between 1840-50 alive on the 1881 census. I have the deaths (both in 1917) for two of these Williams - the ship's carpenter (presumably at sea in 1891 so not showing) and the Irish leather cutter of Maybole. That Liverpool death looks spot on Ev...correct age, of a man who lived in Greenock (or at least his mother died there) in the drinks trade!

Hmm..just checked 25 Baker Street for 1901 and there's a 46 year old widow Fielding showing!

Too exciting  ;)  Ev you are brill!

In the 1893/94 Directory he's working at the bar and living at 6 West Blackhall Street then from 94/95 he's at the bar and living 19 Newton Street. He does not appear in the 98/99 edition...so not that long in England which may account for the Greenock death notice. I've not checked the marriages yet -too busy kicking myself for not checking the Greenock directories to begin with.

Jen
PS checked SP there are TWO marriages in Greenock in 1896 for a William Fielding and a 'Margaret'.

The 2 marriages could be the same one , with the bride showing up with her maiden surname and previous married surname  :-\

Miller / McKellar
