In 1881, widowed Ellen and children are living in the same house as a James and Hannah Middleton and family. Hannah and most of the Middleton children are born Rainton, same as Ellen and her two eldest children. I think this is Ellen's parents and siblings

There is a marriage Dec qtr 1871, Durham, Ellen Middleton and John Thompson (confirmed on Durham Registrars site that these two married).

1861 census, Wharton St., Coundon,
James Middleton, 33, Coal Miner, b. Ireland, Co. Down,
Hannah Middleton, wife, 30, b. West Rainton,
Mary Jane Middleton, dau, 11, Scholar, b. West Rainton,
Ellen Middleton, dau, 7, b. West Rainton,
James Middleton, son, 4, b. West Rainton,
Thomas Middleton, son, 2, b. West Rainton,
John Thompson, Boarder, 19, Coal Miner, b. Ireland, Co, Down.
RG 9/3709/35/7

The John Thompson living with the Middletons may or may not be Ellens future husband, need the marriage cert to confirm.

In 1871 census, Ellen Middleton, 17, b. Rainton, is a Domestic Servant in Framwellgate, Durham.

You have Ellen in 1881 and 1891.

1901 census, Smiths Place, Sherburn, Durham,
Richardson Cardwell, Wid, 49, Coal Hewer, b. Ireland,
Joseph Cardwell, son, 15, Water Leader Farm, b. Sherburn,
Bella Cardwell, dau, 14, b. Sherburn,
Sarah A. Cardwell, dau, 9, b. Sherburn,
Ellen Thompson, Servant, wid, 48, Housekeeper Domestic, b. W. Rainton,
 RG13/4684/109/24

A marriage Lanchester 1903, Ellen Thompson and Richard Cardwell.  Durham Registrars site has Ellen Thompsons fathers surname as Middleton. Search for them in 1911.

Also, in 1891 census, widowed Hannah Middleton and 3 of her sons are on the previous page to Ellen Thompson and her 3 sons.

Hi Wolfie Smith, Thanks for the input :) I had seen Ellen Thompson servant but not found the others.
I know the name could have been mis-spelt but I was hoping to find Cadwell rather than Caldwell :)
I haven't had time to go through the rest that you've put up yet but I will and come back and post...the dates get a bit too close to those I have confirmed though.
The definites I have are James Thompson dob 1872/73 m Rebecca Robbins ms Turnbull est dob 1868/69. and their children (including son Richard Cadwell Thompson 1904) so the Ellen Thompson m to Richard Caldwell in 1903 would be too late...

Thanks for your information..will keep working through it :) Cheers JT

In the 'Marriage Transcripts 1538-1973' there is a record of a marriage between Robert Thompson and Ann Cadwell in 1744 at Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland. This can be confirmed in the Christ Church marriage records which are online and also adds the date as 23 Dec.

Hello JT,

The Ellen Thompson who married Richard Cardwell in 1903 (its Cardwell, not Cadwell or Caldwell) is James Thompson's widowed mother. So it seems Richard Cadwell Thompson, born 1904, was named after his Step Grandfather.
