I paid for a month then realised that the 1939 register was not part of the package yet all other Britain records are. Lesson learned, always check to make sure that a new mega ancestral database is part of the package first. I can make do with the free searches until the hype does die down and if the 1939 register becomes part of the package. I hope to get to TNA soon so I could look up the records in person and not have to pay £25 for 5 households.

This.

It does seem they want you to pay £10 for a month, being the addictive genealogist you are, then happily type a name into the register for 1939 and get a preview, go to unlock the household and get told "Pay As You Go Only", £25 for 5 households.

I paid for two records from the HSCIC 1939 Register Team in 2013 (total cost= £84) so you can understand my hesitance in putting off any further expenditure on these records for the time being. Those two records were transcripts too why didn't I get the images? Surely an image could have been provided for a one off purchase? The old service closed on 2 Nov 2015 and the site now refers customers to FindMyPast:-

It may help to provide more collections sooner in the future if we spend our money with reckless abandon every time something new appears but it can also leave a bitter taste when we look back at what we have paid out for these records over the years.

On the other hand - you could always give up on family history and pursue a cheaper hobby/obsession  ;D ;D ;D

No I'm being more sensible these days. Free access to Ancestry and FindMyPast at my local library.  ;D

Taken to its logical conclusion, FindMyPast could add all sorts of extraneous record sets and charge independently for them in which case, there would be no point in subscribing.

I only subscribe because they give me access to things such as the Cheshire parish records. I can get much of the other information they offer from Ancestry (to which I also have a sub.), their interface is far superior and it also works with Safari - FindMyPast have been "working on it" for as long as I can remember altough I see no evidence of any progress!

Personally, I can't see what the 1939 records would add to my researches; it's mainly a matter of principle.

I paid for a month then realised that the 1939 register was not part of the package

I thought that it was pretty clear on the signup page.

Findmypast like to advertise themselves as a subscription website. So they need to make it as clear as possible what isn't included in the subscription. If you look at the home page at the moment, there's no indication that the 1939 register is completely separate from the rest of the website. To ensure absolute clarity, why not host it on a different website until it becomes part of a subscription?
