Seems the case but hasn't had any probs since I bought it 2007 so really needs service as a while ago was having probs with explorer and think that was the cause?

Comp up & running so they are cleaning it out giving it a full service.

Hmm,

Not sure what a full service is/was but collected comp on 18th Nov & has done nothing but cut out every 5 mins.

Noises in the background,as if doing something (a whirling noise) then each time I close down to reboot it tells me it's updating.

I have lost count of all these updates & slowly all the signs/notifications which were there prior to it's "overhaul" are appearing.

I'm no genius with comp techs but to me...all that's been done is a "Restore".

It can't possibly need updated every time I switch on.

If I get it restored to factory settings (which they have offered to do) will it still update each time I start up?

Thanks hallmark,

That will cost me more than a new comp as I use a dongle.

Basically, I'm certain they have only done a restore for £50

Ah well,

Out of the ? As it would take hrs & hrs & I live in a town with no internet cafe.

This has been ongoing since 18th & logging on and off several times a day.

I can't surf at all without it cutting out then having to turn off & message not switch off then when it starts up it's configuring.

£50 wasted.

Until recently I used a mobile dongle exclusively, too - 15gb per month.
What I always do is turn off the automatic updates and install only the ones I want, manually, at a time to suit me.
Some of these updates are only used to report back details about your machine to Microsoft. As you're on a limited data allowance this is Not Good. You can find a list of unnecessary updates on the web.
 ;)
At least without the updater running you'll have more time/data allowance to sort out any other problems.
Good luck.
 :)

For big downloads I go to Pub ...

Well, I've heard a few excuses . . .  ;)

On a more serious note, if they have re-installed or rolled back the system I would imagine there might be several years' worth of updates to download, so I'd agree with Roger you need to turn off updates at least until the system is running and stable.
