Help with 4 Latin words
« on: Thursday 19 November 15 14:10 GMT (UK) »
I have 2 lines of text from 1636 and, although I can read the English, there are 4 Latin words which I cannot read.  First two might be 'quid novi [what's new] is for ye most part .. then I cannot fathom the next two.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I believe the last word is peroratis.

Agree on Quid novi? is for ye..., despite the vowel looking rather more like an a.

I though the word after Quid might be nobilis, but I may be wrong.  I can't work out what the other two could be.

It's a pity we can't see more of the text.  Might just get a better idea of the meanings then.

Thank you kindly for the responses.  Peroratis I think makes sense.  So, now I have Quid novi - What is new is, for ye most part, ye (onoxdin?) and peroratis (conclusion) of every man's discourse.  So there's just the onoxdin?? word to fathom.

The spelling of the word looks like it is possibly enordin.

I think it will turn out to be a means of saying the beginning, probably with reference to some part of rhetoric or speech-making.

My sense is that the passage is saying that curiosity and attraction to novelty is the beginning and end of every man's desires.

ADDED:  I'm sure you are right with discourse.

exordium and peroratio, maybe cb
exordium is the beginning of a speech and peroratio is the ending of a speech.

Thank you for exordium.  These are not terms I've come across before.  I think horsleydown had the meaning worked out, but many thanks.  The hand writing made it had to work out the exordium.
Just not clear what your message meant by "maybe cb".  Oh, never mind, I realise now it's your initials !!!  Thank you CB
