An evil that ought to be stopped!!
« on: Thursday 19 November 15 16:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi All..

I have a document from an old Derbyshire newspaper regarding my GGG grandparents.

It states that they allowed their children to sell matches in the Corn Market in Derby after 9pm and as a result they were jailed  :o as it "was the first case taken under the new Act"

Does anyone know if there are any other snippets of info I could source or the name of this new Act?

The news report from the Derby Mercury is dated December 1894.

All info gratefully received.

This is most probably the Prevention Of Cruelty To Children Act 1894.

I haven't seen the text of this Act so am not sure how much it was an extension of the Prevention of Cruelty to, and Protection of, Children Act 1889 which was a particularly important piece of social legislation.

It was a bit earlier than that - did it take nearly 5 years to bring a case? ... personally, I never take anything I read in a newspaper at face value.

Ray T, - the source you refer to does not include legislation which was repealed or subsumed into other acts.  Your link is to the 1889 Act I mentioned in my original post.
