Joseph Gibboney Swartz (1910-1975)
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 23:59 GMT (UK) »
Sgt. Joseph Gibboney Swartz,  b. May 10 1910 in Virginia, d. Sept 28 1975 in Dallas, TX.
Resident of Rockbridge Co., Virginia, and perhaps Dallas, Texas. He probably grew up with his 11-13 Swartz siblings near the Natural Bridge, Virginia, and in/near Laurel, Maryland. The Swartz family appears to have moved to Maryland sometime in the late 1920's/early/mid 1930's. Veteran of WW2. 4 wives: Patricia, Vivian, Frances, Mary McGuire Pennington.Buried in Restland Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas. He may have been living close to his brother Francis Aubrey Swartz when he died.
I am looking for any WW2 info on Joe, such as where he served, unit, etc.
Also, any civilian info on Joe would be great.

I see in 1910: Joseph SWARTS, age 6 mths, b Indiana with parents Newell (29) & Elizabeth (20), in Clay, Decatur Cty, Indiana.  His parents' place of birth: Virginia

I see in 1920, Joseph G SWARTZ is age 10, b Virginia  with parents: Newell T (38) & Elizabeth G (30) in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge, Virginia. Among the siblings: the 3 listed after Joseph are  Ruth E (age 8. ), Newall M (age 6) and Margaret J (age 5)  - all b Virginia.

I see in 1930, the parents Newell (49) & Elizabeth (40)  and some of the children;  in Aquasco, Prince George's, Maryland. Son Joseph not there but amongst his siblings who are there, are Ruth (18) and Margaret (15) (as is a brother age 17 but not sure of the name he's enumerated as).

I see the Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File for Joseph G SWARTZ
Born 10 Jun 1910
Enlisted 30 Sep 1942
Discharged 18 Oct 1945
Died 28 Sep 1975

His death certificate says he was born in Hope, Indiana and had resided in Dallas for 27 years.  It can be seen here:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K38N-QHY

In the Kaess/Ochiltree/Swartz Family History (2015), it mistakenly lists the birthplace of Joseph Gibboney Swartz as Virginia- it should be Indiana per the record evidence.
