Way Family - St. Andrews
« on: Friday 15 July 05 00:03 BST (UK) »
William Way & Katherine Dickson married 1826 in St. Andrews.  All of their ten children were Christened in the Hope Park Church, St. Andrews. William died in 1881 and Katherine in 1878.  How does one go about finding out where they might be buried, apart from reading the Parish Records (which would be a four hour drive)?

Way - St. Andrews, Fife
Low - Dundee, Angus & Longforgan, Perth.
Teinder - Tealing, Angus
Gourlay - St. Andrews, Fife

Firstly make contact with the crematorium and cemeteries department of Fife Council to see if they have any burial or lair records for that period.

Secondly, contact the Scottish Genealogical Society in Edinburgh to see if there are any listings of MIs (memorial inscriptions) for the St andres area.

Al,

I have heard rave reviews regarding the helpful people at Fife Council.

Hi Al,

I'd certainly accept Laura's recommendation if I were you!

Some other thoughts (though let's hope you get the specific answer to your query on the wonderful RootsChat!):
* The relevant Rootsweb mailing list (SCT-FIFE-L) is very helpful.  Locals willingly assist and there are also posters there who have compiled lists of MIs and provide photos (though I think they are more concentrated on the west of Fife).
* There are three 'volumes' of MIs for Fife produced by JF and S Mitchell which might be available in a library near you (Vol 1 for SE Fife, Vol 2 for W Fife, and Vol 3 for NE Fife)
* Another good site is that of the Fife Family History Society at:

They have (for sale) a pre-1855 death index CD, and other useful publications (and there's a very good search engine on that site).
* And, of course, could you not order in the relevant film of the Parish Records (after checking on FamilySearch to see whether it includes burials) to your local LDS Family History Centre.

Good luck,

JAP
PS: Only a 4-hour drive ::)  Just a tad easier than travelling from Australia, eh! ;)
