Looking for place-name probably Forgan/Balmarino area

I really appreciate this and was thinking I may have a look at the Parish records in Cupar Library.
Just in case I can get a better look at the spelling.
I have also asked St Fort estate if they have any knowledge of such a place. Will need to wait and see if I get a reply.
I will of course let you know.

....gate being the old word for road, as people no doubt know - eg Towngate as a main street name.

I would still like to see the original from which the name transcription is taken. There are several places around that it could be - for instance I see Muttonhole Wood, Moorhouses even a word beginning with Wormit....

I also find [using my specialist knowledge    ] that the area is part of the Estate of St Fort [Ford] in the Barony of Naughton. Here is part of the description on the property search sheet. Perhaps something to do with Naughton - or I see Harlowheills? Just looking for ups & downs in the manuscript version of words....on the Ainslie  map there is a Mornday near Moorhouses

I had a look at the RCAHMS site

to see if there was anything like the place name in scheduled monuments, but no.

I assume that at least one of the ROGERs you are looking at is a direct ancestor in which case I am hoping you have a copy of the original OPR entry (and perhaps those for the others too).  Would you put up a snippet from the baptism so we can see exactly what the register entry is?

I actually think that this place may be a corrupted name of "Mountquhanie".

I think this is both essential & in hand, Vengeur.

Mountquanie NO347212 is some way from the other areas [Gateside NO408259, Flass NO411258, Inverdovat NO431274] so we would have to assume that the family moved around.

Assuming the place is not Mountquanie and may be in St Fort estate, if the place name went out of use many years ago, the current estate owners may not know of it. However they may still have records in their possession & may even let you have access to them. The records in the NRS may prove more useful. An estate rental [or map] might show it, although the word 'rental' is misleading as it used to cover mainly lists of feuars & their feuduties as well as tenants paying rent.

That's my feeling. Somehow the 'gog/gogue' bit at the end doesn't sound Scottish....bog - yes  especially as Flass/flash mean boggy as does 'miry'.

Hello TamPepper,
     The old wedge-shaped Churchyard at Balmerino has wide stone stairs linking 2 levels. Katherine's headstone is close to the row of yew trees on the higher level between the stairs & the yews. It faces & leans slightly forward towards the yews.
     There's a car park & newer burial ground on the Kirkton side of the Churchyard but I've only come in from Balmerino. On the right, just past the ruins of Balmerino Abbey, a very narrow lane leads between the cottages to the Churchyard. There's a gate & space for 1-2 cars at the narrowest part of the wedge-shape on the Balmerino side. The lane goes on past the cemetery to the main car park & Kirkton village.
     I found Katherine's headstone on a sunny day this summer (2015). The view from the Churchyard with the 'silvery Tay' sparkling in the sun was just perfect. A lovely place to have as your final resting place.
