Turner - is this an occupation?
« on: Friday 15 July 05 07:39 BST (UK) »
Hi

On a marriage cert the occupation is either farmer or turner.

The father is a blacksmith, so would a turner have anything to do with this ?

A turner "turned" wood - making chair legs or bowls.  A more rustic version is the bodger who used equipment a bit like a bent over tree sapling with a rope and a blade attached.  The operator peddles the contraption and the wood is turned, giving an even cut around the surface.

I'm sure someone will find a dictionary description, but that is my impression.  ;D
