It's a case of "horses for courses".
It would depend on what info they require.
If it's the usual census etc. then Ancestry has the edge on FindMyPast.
They can always buy a few credits on FindMyPast if that's the only place they can get what they're looking for.

I know I can get FindMyPast at the library so I have ancestry at home - best of both worlds then  ;)

Depends what your friend wants to find. I only know about the England and Wales records. Both Ancestry and Findmypast have BMD and censuses. But there is a LOT of variety in which parish registers they have.
This is not a complete list!
Ancestry - Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, London, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Dorset, Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Hertfordshire
Findmypast - Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Kent, Lincolnshire

Also, both websites offer free trials, so suggest your friend tries out both before deciding.
Transcribing Essex records for FreeREG.
Current parishes - Burnham, Purleigh, Steeple.
Get in touch if you have any interest in these places!

Sorry, well spotted!
Also add Surrey to the list of Ancestry records :)

Also add Surrey to the list of Ancestry records :)

Oops, missed that one.

Ancestry have the West Yorkshire records, the rest of the county are on FindMyPast, although I think it is still a work in progress.

FindMyPast's Kent coverage for orginal parish registers is only the Canterbury Diocese area, although they do have some FHS transcripts for other areas.

Ancestry also have the original parish registers for the Bexley area of Kent.
