John Pottage - a dyer in York 1820s
« on: Wednesday 02 December 15 14:32 GMT (UK) »
Pigot's directory for 1828-9 lists a John Pottage and son as dyers living at 55 Fossgate, York.
I have found a baptism of a John Pottage s/o John Pottage silk dyer and Frances Thompson at St Dennis, York on 1st March 1806 (birth Feb 26th).
I have found the family in 1851 at 55 Fossgate, both John's are dyers, John senior's place of birth is Bugthorpe abt 1785.
The nearest baptism at Bugthorpe is John s/o Thomas (blacksmith) no mother recorded bapt on 23 Feb 1783.
then the trail goes cold. Please can anyone help find where Thomas came from. I feel sure he must fit in somewhere with my Wheldrake and Riccall Pottages.

Oh dear, I think I have got a big error on my tree. While looking for a likely Thomas in terms of age, I found I have Thomas Pottage bapt in Wheldrake 19 Apr 1743, married Frances Friar 24 may 1774, North Newbald and buried Bolton Percy 3 May 1827. The trouble is he was a carpenter, had a son John in 1775 and although I haven't found a death for this John, there isn't really a space for a replacement John between his later children if the first one had died young.
Then I looked more closely at my sources and there are actually two Thomases - very close contemporaries
Thomas #1 bapt 1743 Wheldrake and buried 7 Feb 1826 Wheldrake and
Thomas #2 born abt 1747 (according to age at death) and buried 3 May 1827 Bolton Percy
and I've merged them into one.
So Bolton Percy Thomas isn't the one born in Wheldrake and isn't the son of my 6 x great grandfather and brother of my 5 x great grandfather.
But Wheldrake Thomas  is definitely my relative and needs to be investigated as he could be the father of John born in Bugthorpe (if he lived to be an adult and married that is).
